RESOLUTION
Commending
the Georgia Tech Band on its 100th anniversary and for its appearance in the
2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
in 1908, 14 students at the Georgia Institute of Technology joined together to
form the first Georgia Tech Band; and
WHEREAS,
during the early years, the Tech Band established and popularized the
far-reaching tunes "Ramblin' Wreck," "Up With the White and Gold," and the
school's alma mater under the direction of greats including Frank Roman, Major
A.J. Garing, and Ben Logan Sisk; and
WHEREAS,
over the years, the band and music program have expanded to include an
orchestra, a jazz band, chamber ensembles, and an electronic percussion
ensemble, with the opportunity to perform around the state, nation, and
overseas; and
WHEREAS,
the year 2008 marked the 100th anniversary of the Georgia Tech Band;
and
WHEREAS,
in honor of its centennial, the band performed in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving
Day Parade in New York City and was one of only two collegiate bands invited to
appear in the 2008 parade; and
WHEREAS,
under the direction of Athletic Band Director Christopher Moore, the 350 student
members of the Yellow Jackets Marching Band prepared for months to perform on
the streets of Manhattan on Thursday, November 27, 2008, before more than 46
million attendees and television viewers; and
WHEREAS,
throughout its 100 year history, culminating with a dazzling performance in
Herald Square in November, the Georgia Tech Band has brought pride, honor, and
esteem to Georgia Tech and the great State of
Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED
BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in commending
the Georgia Tech Band on its 100th anniversary and for its outstanding
performance in the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and congratulate its
leaders and members on their great accomplishments.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Athletic Band
Director Christopher Moore and Music Department Director Frank Clark.
