A RESOLUTION


Commending Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was founded on January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three young, African American men, A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown; and

WHEREAS, their intention was to establish a fraternity that exemplified the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service and one that viewed itself as a part of the community; and

WHEREAS, from its inception, the fraternity has served as a mechanism for delivering services to the community, an attitude reflected in the fraternity's motto, "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity"; and

WHEREAS, in 1920, the men of Phi Beta Sigma helped to establish their sister organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., which makes the two organizations the only two "consitutionally bound" Greek organizations; and

WHEREAS, throughout the organization's history, Phi Beta Sigma has seen many brothers become innovators and great leaders, including George Washington Carver, A. Phillip Randolph, Hosea Williams, United States Congressman John Lewis, Les Brown, Hines Ward, and Dr. Ben Chavez; and

WHEREAS, for the last 95 years, Phi Beta Sigma has stood at the forefront of change and service establishing the Sigma Beta Club, participating in voter registration drives, partnering with the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society, and feeding the homeless; and

WHEREAS, with 38 collegiate and alumni chapters in Georgia, Phi Beta Sigma continues a rich tradition of service and fellowship.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., for their service to the community and the country.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
