RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Mr. Charley Trippi; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Mr. Charley Trippi is regarded by many as the greatest all-around athlete to
ever play for the University of Georgia, and this superstar of the National
Football League has generously devoted his time, fame, and renown to help uplift
the lives of others; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Trippi began earning Hall of Fame distinction as a sophomore at UGA, leading
the Bulldogs to the 1942 SEC and National Championships and a 9-0 victory over
UCLA in the 1943 Rose Bowl, a game for which he was named the game's outstanding
player after rushing 130 yards; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945, and returned to UGA to play the final
six games of the 1945 season; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Trippi was a unanimous All-America selection in 1946 after leading UGA to a
perfect 11-0 record, SEC Championship, and victory over North Carolina in the
Sugar Bowl, and led the SEC in scoring with 84 points his senior year, finishing
the season with 1,366 yards in total offense; and
WHEREAS,
he was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1946 and won the Maxwell Award for
most valuable player in the country; and
WHEREAS,
following his collegiate career, Mr. Trippi signed with the Chicago Cardinals
and led them to the world championship during his rookie season;
and
WHEREAS,
during his NFL career, Mr. Trippi rushed for 3,506 yards and 23 touchdowns as a
halfback, threw for 2,547 yards and 16 touchdowns as a quarterback, and added an
additional 1,321 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns;
and
WHEREAS, he has 1,457 kick return
yards and 864 punt return yards and two touchdowns for a total of 9,695 yards in
only nine seasons and played defense for two seasons, averaging 40 yards per
punt; and
WHEREAS,
he has received numerous honors, including being named into the National College
Football Hall of Fame, National Pro Football Hall of Fame, Rose Bowl Hall of
Fame, and State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Trippi was an All-America baseball player in 1946 and played with the
Atlanta Crackers in 1947 and was the assistant coach at UGA and for the St.
Louis Cardinals; and
WHEREAS,
in recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements, it is abundantly
fitting and proper that this extraordinary athlete be appropriately
recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Mr. Charley Trippi for his years of hard work and perseverance
and recognize his outstanding contributions to the University of Georgia and the
Chicago Cardinals.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Mr. Charley
Trippi.
