A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Thomas J. "Tim" Hynes, Jr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas J. "Tim" Hynes, Jr., is the president of Clayton State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hynes earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, a master's degree in communication studies from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in communication studies from the University of Massachusetts; and

WHEREAS, he served as provost and vice president of academic affairs, professor of mass communications, and acting president at the University of West Georgia where he was involved in leadership activities in strategic planning, campus-wide student retention projects, reform of campus efforts for the preparation of educators and school leaders, and technology planning; and

WHEREAS, he was on the faculty for 18 years at the University of Louisville where he served as the founding director of the University Debate Program, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the SACS reaffirmation steering committee and the NCAA accreditation committee; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hynes served as chair of the Georgia Humanities Council and the board of trustees of the National Debate Tournament; director of the finance board of the National Communication Association and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Communication Association, Executive Committee of the Carroll Tomorrow Initiative, and Clayton County, Fayette County, and Metro Atlanta Chambers of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, he has received numerous honors, including National Debate Coach of the Year by Emory University and Georgetown University; named twice as one of the Leaders in Atlanta Education by the Atlanta Business Chronicle; alumni and administrative awards from the University of West Georgia, the University of Louisville, and the University of Massachusetts; and named Who's Who in America and Who's Who among educators and professionals; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Hynes has edited ten textbooks and authored more than 40 articles and scholarly papers; and

WHEREAS, he is the loving father of a remarkable son, Patrick; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Dr. Thomas J. "Tim" Hynes, Jr., for his sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education and extend to him sincere best wishes for a lifetime of health and happiness.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Thomas J. "Tim" Hynes, Jr.
