RESOLUTION
Honoring
the artist, committee, and businesses involved in the commission of the Patrick
Henry statue; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Henry County, Georgia, was created on May 15, 1821, and named in honor and
memory of our founding father, Patrick Henry of Virginia; and
WHEREAS,
on March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, unafraid of the British Crown, presented a
proposal to pit Virginia against Britain, exhorting "Is life so dear, or peace
so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it,
Almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me
liberty or give me death"; and
WHEREAS,
Patrick Henry helped draft the Bill of Rights to the Constitution;
and
WHEREAS,
he was elected to six terms as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, led the
protest of the Stamp Act, was a member of the first and second Continental
Congresses, and was a founding member of the Sons of Liberty; and
WHEREAS,
exceptional individuals, groups, and businesses in Henry County joined together
to commission a statue of Patrick Henry to be erected in the county;
and
WHEREAS,
those individuals, groups, and businesses which have worked to make this statue
a reality are commended for their efforts, and it is abundantly fitting and
proper that they be recognized.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body honor the life and memory of Patrick Henry and commend artist and
founder Andy Davis, citizens Don Dunlap, Todd Ernst, B.J. Mathis, David Curry,
and the entire Patrick Henry Historic Culture Committee for their vision and
dedication to this endeavor.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Andy Davis, Don Dunlap, Todd Ernst, B.J. Mathis, David Curry, and the entire Patrick Henry Historic Culture Committee.
