A RESOLUTION


Commending the Arms Reach organization and the second annual Literacy Walk; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, a proper quality education for the young people of this state is the single most important objective of the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, in May, 2009, the Arms Reach organization collaborated with Women In NAACP (WIN) to hold an inaugural Walk for Literacy to eliminate illiteracy in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the annual Literacy Walk was developed by Ms. Cee'Cee' Anderson and Dr. Artis W. Murphy; and

WHEREAS, the Literacy Walk begins at Martin Luther King Jr., Drive and Fulton Industrial Boulevard and passes by four economically vital locations to the City of Atlanta; and

WHEREAS, the Literacy Walk takes participants through several historical sites and pathways of education and concludes at the Georgia State Capitol with a forum for educators, community leaders, civic advocates, and parents who want to assist children in becoming educated and contributing Georgia citizens; and

WHEREAS, this year's Literacy Walk was another successful event with participants walking 15 miles through Atlanta to promote education in Georgia; and

WHEREAS, the focus of the second annual Literacy Walk was to bring awareness to the importance of literacy and encourage all Georgia students to pass the Georgia Graduation Test; succeed on the CRCT, SAT, and ACT; and graduate from high school; and

WHEREAS, the Literacy Walk is a unique and important way for parents, teachers, and community leaders to unite in support of education in Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend the Arms Reach organization and Women In NAACP for their successful second annual Literacy Walk and recognize their commitment to fighting illiteracy in Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Arms Reach organization and Women In NAACP.
