RESOLUTION
Honoring
the life and memory of Dr. H.E. "Herb" Valentine; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS,
the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Dr. H.E. "Herb" Valentine; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Valentine was born on and raised in Valentines, Virginia, a town near the
Virginia-North Carolina border that was founded by and named for his ancestors,
and he earned a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College; and
WHEREAS,
he served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United
States Marines, valiantly and courageously protecting democracy and his fellow
Americans during three campaigns in the Pacific during World War II;
and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Valentine practiced internal medicine in Gainesville, Georgia, for more than
40 years and was a member of the first medical staff of Hall County Hospital,
where he served as the hospital's chief of staff; and
WHEREAS,
he earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, completed an
internship at Emory University, and began his practice in Gainesville in 1948;
and
WHEREAS,
this talented doctor was president of the Hall County Medical Society and made
house calls to the rural areas of Dawson and Forsyth counties, often accepting
only vegetables from patients' gardens or a jar of honey from those who could
not afford to make monetary payments; and
WHEREAS,
an avid supporter of Gainesville High School athletics, Dr. Valentine was
honored by the school system in 2007 with the naming of Gainesville High
School's weight-training facility in his honor; and
WHEREAS,
Dr. Valentine was united in love and marriage to Bonnelle Lawson Valentine and
was blessed with four remarkable sons, Herbert, Dick, Tommy, and Mike;
and
WHEREAS,
he gave inspiration to many through his high ideals, morals, and deep concern
for his fellow citizens, and the devotion, patience, and understanding he
demonstrated to his family and friends were admired by others; and
WHEREAS,
he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for
integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of
his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and
WHEREAS,
a compassionate and generous man, Dr. Valentine will long be remembered for his
love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, physician, and
friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing
him.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body join in honoring the life and memory of Dr. H.E. "Herb" Valentine and
express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Dr. H.E. "Herb" Valentine.
