A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Mr. John Burl Hulsey, Sr.; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Mr. John Burl Hulsey, Sr., on July 16, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hulsey was a beloved son of the late Claud Hulsey and Yula Blalock Hulsey, and was a descendant of one of the first pioneer settlers of Hall County, Georgia, his great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Thompson, who built the area's first covered bridge known as Thompson Bridge; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Gainesville High School, Mr. Hulsey also graduated from North Georgia College and attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, he was one of 14 to enter the Civilian Pilot Training Program and volunteered for the United States Naval Flight Program, serving as an instructor in Pensacola, Florida, and New Orleans, Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hulsey was one of 44 pilots selected for the top secret program developing the first guided missile and served as a guardian of this nation's freedom and liberty with the United States Navy and Naval Reserve; and

WHEREAS, he was a life member of the American Legion and Elks Club, a member of the Korean War Veterans and Sons of the American Revolution, and a former Troop 26 Boy Scouts Leader; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Mr. Hulsey was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for 62 years, where he served as a life deacon, a member of the Anglers Sunday school class, a past Sunday school teacher, and chairman of the property committee; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hulsey was united in love and marriage for 61 wonderful years to Mary Louise Durrette Hulsey, and was blessed with his children, John, Jr., Cinda Hulsey, David Hulsey, Beth and Dr. Gerald Carlson, and Wesley Hulsey; son-in-law Segundo Fernandez; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, he was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example he made of his life, he made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous man, Mr. Hulsey will long be remembered for his love of family and friendship, and this loyal husband, father, grandfather, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Mr. John Burl Hulsey, Sr., and express their deepest and most sincere regret at his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. John Burl Hulsey, Sr.
