A RESOLUTION


Honoring the life and memory of Elizabeth Walton Bowen "Chunk" Reichert; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens with the passing of Elizabeth Walton Bowen "Chunk" Reichert on February 22, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Chunk, a name her father gave her when he called her his "chunk" of gold, was born on July 2, 1915, in Macon, Georgia, a beloved daughter of the late Orsamus Allan Bowen and Louise Margaret Napier Bowen; and

WHEREAS, she was an honor student in high school and upon graduation was awarded a silver loving cup for Best All Around Student; and

WHEREAS, she attended Duke University where she was elected President of her Freshman Class and President of the Student Government Association her senior year, was one of seven students selected for the White Duchess Honor Society, and graduated in 1937; and

WHEREAS, a woman of deep and abiding faith, Chunk was an active member of Vineville United Methodist Church where she was a leader of the church circle and long-time member of the Ed Cook Class; and

WHEREAS, active in civic and cultural affairs, Chunk served as a member of Historic Macon, Inc., Macon Symphony Orchestra, and Macon Concert Association and President of the Junior League of Macon, History Club of Macon, and Morning Music Club; and

WHEREAS, Chunk, along with Libby Timberlake and Betty Timberlake, established the W. Derrell Hazlehurst Scholarship Fund at Mercer Medical School; and

WHEREAS, she was united in love and marriage for 75 years to the late Albert Phillips Reichert, and was blessed with three remarkable sons, Albert Phillips, Jr., Stephen Allan, and Robert Adger Bowen; four wonderful grandchildren, Albert Phillips Reichert III, John Walker Reichert, Elizabeth Bowen Reichert, and Thomas Dunwody Reichert; and three adored great-grandchildren, Eden Pape, Luna Walker, and Sarana Burnam Reichert; and

WHEREAS, she was a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness and, by the example she made of her life, she made this world a better place in which to live; and

WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Chunk will long be remembered for her love of family and friendship, and this loyal daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Elizabeth Walton Bowen "Chunk" Reichert and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of Elizabeth Walton Bowen "Chunk" Reichert.
