A
RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending Georgia Women of Achievement and 2012 honoree Ms. Beulah Rucker
Oliver; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Georgia Women of Achievement was established to publicize achievements of
Georgia women through an annual induction ceremony, a traveling exhibit, a
website, and a teacher resource guide; and
WHEREAS,
Georgia Women of Achievement provides information about role models to inspire
Georgia youth and advocates the inclusion of women's achievements in educational
materials; and
WHEREAS,
each year, Georgia Women of Achievement honors three women who lived lives that
inspired others to make use of their talents and who made exceptional
contributions to society; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Beulah Rucker Oliver set an example for all women with her determination to
make the world a better place; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Rucker worked towards her degree at Savannah State College while teaching
public and private school, giving music lessons, and making and selling hats
until she finally received her degree in 1944 at age 56; and
WHEREAS,
Ms. Rucker opened The Industrial School, her first school in Hall County;
and
WHEREAS,
after having two schools in the city, she moved her facility to the country
where she proved to be an excellent fundraiser and educator for the African
American community, and eventually merged her school with the City of
Gainesville School District in the 1950s; and
WHEREAS,
she was the first to receive a Rosenwald Grant for her school, the first woman
to establish a school in Gainesville, and the first to start a Veterans Night
School in the state; and
WHEREAS,
her daughters, Carre N. Bailey and Dorothy B. Rucker, along with former student
Laura M. Whelchel, founded and dedicated The Educational Foundation and Museum
Beulah Rucker, Inc., in honor of her life and great work; and
WHEREAS,
the citizens of Georgia owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Georgia Women of
Achievement and to 2012 honoree Ms. Beulah Rucker Oliver for her many
contributions to her community and this state and the positive role model she
represents for women of all ages.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend Georgia Women of Achievement for promoting the great efforts
of women to improve the quality of life for all Americans and extend
congratulations to the family of 2012 honoree Ms. Beulah Rucker
Oliver.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the family of
Ms. Beulah Rucker Oliver.
