A RESOLUTION


Recognizing and commending Dr. Samuel T. King on being named Georgia's 2010 Superintendent of the Year and inviting him to be recognized by the House of Representatives; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Samuel T. King has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he has played in the teaching profession and his deep personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, a native of Smithville, Georgia, Dr. King earned a bachelor's degree in middle grades education from Mercer University, a master's degree and specialist degree in education administration and supervision from State University of West Georgia, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Sarasota; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King began his career in education over 26 years ago as a fifth grade science and math teacher in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and over the years has taught middle and high school levels; and

WHEREAS, he has served in various administrative capacities, including assistant principal, principal, area executive officer, area assistant superintendent, and assistant superintendent; and

WHEREAS, Dr. King has served as superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools since 2005, where he has earned respect and admiration for maintaining a debt-free school system and leading the school system to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress for the past five years; and

WHEREAS, this year he has been recognized as Georgia's 2010 Superintendent of the Year after three years of being nominated for the prestigious award; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools, Dr. King developed and implemented a five-year strategic plan using the community to assist in its planning and oversight; and

WHEREAS, he has been honored as an Outstanding Educator by the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and is a member of the prestigious Century Club 100, which fosters educational leadership through a nationwide idea exchange of two active superintendents from each state; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his contributions to the students in this state, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body heartily and gratefully commend Dr. Samuel T. King for his decades of sacrifice, foresight, accomplishment, and contributions on behalf of education in Georgia; recognize the positive influence he has had upon the lives and futures of countless young people in this state; congratulate him upon being named Georgia's 2010 Superintendent of the Year; and invite him to be recognized by the House of Representatives at a date and time to be specified by the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Dr. Samuel T. King.
