Florida Senate - 2012 (NP) SR 2092 By Senator Smith 29-02406-12 20122092__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing February 7, 2012, as “FSU 3 Day” in Florida and celebrating Florida State 4 University’s contribution as an outstanding 5 institution of higher education. 6 7 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University 8 is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida and 9 holds the state’s first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which was 10 chartered in 1935, and 11 WHEREAS, in 1994, Florida State University joined an elite 12 group of the nation’s top research universities in achieving 13 designation as a “Research I” institution by the Carnegie 14 Foundation, and 15 WHEREAS, today, Florida State University offers graduate 16 and undergraduate degrees in 324 programs within 16 independent 17 colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 2,306, which has 18 included 12 National Academy of Sciences members and six Nobel 19 Laureates, and 20 WHEREAS, the freshman class entering Florida State 21 University in the 2011 Fall semester was one of the most 22 academically accomplished freshman classes in the university’s 23 history, with an average high school GPA of 3.9, an average SAT 24 score of 1850, and an average composite ACT score of 27, and 25 WHEREAS, the academic accomplishments of accepted honors 26 students entering Florida State University in the 2011 Fall 27 semester are even more impressive, with an average high school 28 GPA of 4.3, and 29 WHEREAS, Florida State University is the headquarters for 30 the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), which 31 designs, builds, and operates the world’s most powerful research 32 magnets, attracting more than 700 scientists from across the 33 globe and pushing the frontiers of science and engineering, and 34 realizing a return of $5.17 for every dollar invested by the 35 taxpayers of this state, and 36 WHEREAS, the Florida State University Veterans Center was 37 opened as part of the university’s efforts to become the most 38 veteran-friendly campus in the nation, with its Veterans House 39 serving as the focal point for all campus veteran resources, 40 academic advising, orientation and transition programming, 41 personal and rehabilitative support services, and assistance 42 with United States Department of Veterans Affairs’ educational 43 benefits and certification, and 44 WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine 45 launched a statewide clinical research network that now includes 46 more than 1,900 Florida physicians and more than three million 47 patients in the effort to improve health care outcomes for all 48 Floridians, and 49 WHEREAS, Florida State University College of Medicine 50 alumni in 2012 entered into practice in communities that have a 51 significant need for more physicians, including Bonifay, 52 Blountstown, Clermont, and Marianna, and 70 percent of the 53 college’s graduates who practice in this state are primary care 54 physicians, ensuring that the state has more physicians 55 practicing in areas of practice having significant need, and 56 WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the 57 lives of Florida State University students due to its long 58 standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural 59 diversity on campus, along with the aggressive recruitment of 60 diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE, 61 62 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 63 64 That the members of the Florida Senate recognize February 65 7, 2012, as “FSU Day” in Florida and celebrate Florida State 66 University’s contribution as an outstanding institution of 67 higher education. 68 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with 69 the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Florida State 70 University President Eric J. Barron, Ph.D., as a tangible token 71 of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
