    1                          Senate Resolution                        
    2         A resolution recognizing the commitment of the members
    3         of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to worldwide
    4         service and expressing appreciation for their service
    5         in this state.

    7         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
    8  Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
    9         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is the first
   10  Greek letter organization established for and by African
   11  American college women, and
   12         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is an
   13  international organization with many chapters located in
   14  communities and on the campuses of colleges and universities
   15  throughout the state, and
   16         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
   17  community service and has made numerous contributions to the
   18  educational, civic, and social lives of Floridians, and
   19         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., under the
   20  leadership of International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson,
   21  will be “Launching New Dimensions of Service” through its
   22  commitment to expanding its community presence and addressing
   23  community needs under the banner of five initiatives:
   24  educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening,
   25  environmental ownership, and global impact, and
   26         WHEREAS, each year, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
   27  Sorority, Inc., implement International Community Service Days,
   28  which highlight the organization’s collective impact in targeted
   29  program areas, and
   30         WHEREAS, these program areas include the Dr. Martin Luther
   31  King, Jr., Day of Service, in January; Pink Goes Red for Heart
   32  Health Day, in February; 1908 Playgrounds Mobilization Day, in
   33  May; The Longest Day Alzheimer’s Support Activities, in June;
   34  Mental Health Awareness Day, in July; and Childhood Hunger
   35  Awareness Day, in October, and
   36         WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., has
   37  strategically aligned with corporate partners to assist in
   38  achieving the organization’s international program goals,
   39  including the United Nations Association of the United States of
   40  America (UNA-USA) Global Classrooms Project, Alzheimer’s
   41  Association, American Heart Association, American Stroke
   42  Association, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and
   43  Africare, and
   44         WHEREAS, South Atlantic Regional Director Sharon Brown
   45  Harriott leads the membership of this great sisterhood in
   46  Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, and
   47         WHEREAS, two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
   48  serve in the Florida Legislature, House Democratic Leader pro
   49  tempore Mia L. Jones and Senator Geraldine Thompson, and
   50         WHEREAS, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
   51  contribute thousands of volunteer hours implementing service
   52  projects and programs in their respective communities throughout
   53  this state, NOW, THEREFORE,

   55  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
   56  
   57         That we recognize the commitment of the members of Alpha
   58  Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to worldwide service and express
   59  appreciation for their service in this state.
