Florida Senate - 2014 SB 232 By Senator Hukill 8-00023C-14 2014232__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to biometric information; amending s. 3 1003.01, F.S.; defining the term “biometric 4 information” as it relates to public K-12 education; 5 creating s. 1003.34, F.S.; prohibiting a school 6 district or school from collecting a student’s 7 biometric information; providing an effective date. 8 9 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 10 11 Section 1. Subsection (17) is added to section 1003.01, 12 Florida Statutes, to read: 13 1003.01 Definitions.—As used in this chapter, the term: 14 (17) “Biometric information” means information collected 15 from the noninvasive electronic measurement and evaluation of 16 any physical or behavioral characteristics that are attributable 17 to a single person, including fingerprint characteristics, hand 18 characteristics, eye characteristics, vocal characteristics, 19 facial characteristics, and any other physical characteristics 20 used for the purpose of electronically identifying that person 21 with a high degree of certainty. Methods used to collect 22 biometric information include, but are not limited to, a 23 fingerprint or hand scan, a retina or iris scan, a voice print, 24 or a face geometry scan. 25 Section 2. Section 1003.34, Florida Statutes, is created to 26 read: 27 1003.34 Student biometric information.—A school district or 28 school may not collect a student’s biometric information for any 29 purpose. 30 Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2014.
