House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the Boy Scouts of America on the
3occasion of its 100th anniversary.

5 WHEREAS, Chicago publisher William D. Boyce incorporated
6the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910, after being
7inspired by an English Boy Scout who guided him through a dense
8London fog and refused a tip, explaining that he was doing his
9Good Turn as a Scout, and
10 WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America was established to teach
11the boys of the United States patriotism, courage, self-
12reliance, and kindred values, and
13 WHEREAS, under the leadership of its founders, including
14Daniel Carter Beard, the first National Scout Commissioner;
15Ernest Thompson Seton, the first Chief Scout; and Dr. James E.
16West, the first Chief Scout Executive, the national Scouting
17movement rapidly expanded throughout the United States, and
18 WHEREAS, more than 100 million boys have strived to uphold
19the Scout Oath: "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to
20God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other
21people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally
22awake, and morally straight," and
23 WHEREAS, the Scout Law defines that a Scout is
24"trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind,
25obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent," and
26 WHEREAS, on August 12, 1912, the first Eagle Scout rank was
27presented to Arthur Eldred, and more than 2 million Scouts have
28since earned the Eagle Scout rank, and
29 WHEREAS, more than 1 million volunteer adult leaders
30selflessly serve young people in their communities each year
31through the Boy Scouts of America, and
32 WHEREAS, the vision of the Boy Scouts of America remains to
33prepare every eligible boy in the United States to become a
34responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by
35the Scout Oath and Law, and
36 WHEREAS, this year, Florida's 10 local councils of the Boy
37Scouts of America, together with the 108,000 Scouts and adult
38leaders in the state, are celebrating Scouting's 100th
39anniversary with the theme Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing
40the Journey, NOW, THEREFORE,

42Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
43Florida:

45 That the Boy Scouts of America is congratulated on the
46occasion of its 100th anniversary and commended for its many
47years of service to the youth of this state.
48 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
49presented to the Alabama-Florida Council, Central Florida
50Council, Gulf Coast Council, Gulf Ridge Council, Gulf Stream
51Council, North Florida Council, South Florida Council, Southwest
52Florida Council, Suwannee River Area Council, and West Central
53Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America as a tangible token
54of the sentiments expressed herein.
