House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing September 2011 as "Prostate
3Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most common cancer
6diagnosed among men in Florida, and the American Cancer Society
7estimates that, in 2010, more than 217,730 new cases of prostate
8cancer were diagnosed in the United States and that there were
9more than 2,590 deaths in Florida last year attributed to
10prostate cancer, and
11     WHEREAS, of all the United States, Florida ranks third in
12the number of prostate cancer cases and second in the number of
13prostate cancer deaths, and
14     WHEREAS, African American and other black men have the
15highest prostate cancer death rate in the world and a mortality
16rate that is twice that of Caucasian men, and
17     WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society recommends that men
18begin annual prostate cancer screening at age 50, except for men
19at high risk, such as African Americans and men having a family
20history of the disease, who are advised to begin annual
21screening at age 45, and
22     WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer
23patients is nearly 100 percent if the disease is diagnosed at
24the local and regional stages, otherwise known as the early
25stages, and
26     WHEREAS, the Man-to-Man Program of the American Cancer
27Society attempts to increase prostate cancer awareness,
28education, and support during the month of September and
29throughout the year, NOW, THEREFORE,

31Be It Resolved by the Florida House of Representatives of the
32State of Florida:

34     That September 2011 is recognized as "Prostate Cancer
35Awareness Month" in Florida and all men are urged to understand
36the risks associated with prostate cancer, to take preventive
37steps to minimize those risks, and to consult their doctors
38about annual prostate cancer screening and compliance with the
39screening guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society.
