House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the week of February 6-12, 2011,
3as "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week" in the State
4of Florida.

6 WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are the most common birth
7defect, and congenital heart disease is the leading cause of
8birth-defect-related deaths worldwide, and
9 WHEREAS, in the United States, nearly twice as many
10children die from a congenital heart defect each year than from
11all forms of childhood cancers combined, and
12 WHEREAS, every year one out of every 150 babies born in the
13state of Florida is born with a congenital heart defect, and
14numerous families across the United States are facing the
15challenges and hardships of raising children with congenital
16heart defects, and
17 WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed
18until months or years after birth, and undiagnosed congenital
19heart conditions cause many cases of sudden cardiac death in
20young athletes, and
21 WHEREAS, despite these alarming statistics, newborns and
22young athletes are not routinely screened for congenital heart
23defects, some of which may be treated or corrected with
24medicine, medical devices, or surgery, and
25 WHEREAS, the annual cost for surgery and care of congenital
26heart defects exceeds $4.8 billion, NOW, THEREFORE,

28Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
29Florida:

31 That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes
32February 6-12, 2011, as "Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week"
33in the State of Florida.
