House Resolution
2A resolution designating April 6, 2010, as "Florida State
3University Day."

5 WHEREAS, the main campus of Florida State University is
6located in Tallahassee on the oldest continuous site of higher
7education in the state and hosts the state's oldest chapter of
8Phi Beta Kappa, chartered in 1935, and
9 WHEREAS, Florida State University was designated a
10"Research I" doctoral-granting institution in 1994 by the
11Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, joining an
12elite group of the nation's top research universities, and
13 WHEREAS, Florida State University offers graduate and
14undergraduate degrees in 322 programs within 16 independent
15colleges and schools that are taught by 2,268 faculty members,
16which has included 12 National Academy of Sciences members and
17six Nobel Laureates, and
18 WHEREAS, Florida State University established its Office of
19National Fellowships in January 2005 and, since that date, its
20students have been awarded more than 40 national competitive
21scholarships and fellowships, including three Rhodes
22scholarships, three Truman scholarships, three Goldwater
23scholarships, the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship, the Udall
24scholarship, and 26 Fulbright fellowships, and
25 WHEREAS, Florida State University is home to the National
26High Magnetic Field Laboratory, where the world's most powerful
27magnet is used for research in unexplored areas of science and
28in engineering technologies for a new century, and
29 WHEREAS, Florida State University established the Institute
30for Energy Systems, Economics, and Sustainability, which is a
31public resource that unites researchers from the disciplines of
32engineering, the natural sciences, law, urban and regional
33planning, geography, and economics to generate research leading
34to the development of a successful sustainable energy strategy
35for the state, and
36 WHEREAS, the Florida State University College of Medicine,
37together with its statewide network of more than 1,500
38physician-faculty members, is celebrating its 10th anniversary
39as the nation's newest fully accredited medical school as it
40continues to fulfill its unique statutory mission of training
41patient-centered physicians for elder, rural, minority,
42underserved, and other populations of the state, and
43 WHEREAS, Florida State University's longstanding tradition
44of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity, together
45with its aggressive recruitment of diverse groups of students,
46continues to enrich the university's college experience and the
47lives of its students, and
48 WHEREAS, on February 1, 2010, Florida State University
49welcomed its alumnus, Dr. Eric J. Barron, as the university's
5014th president, NOW, THEREFORE,

52Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
53Florida:

55 That April 6, 2010, is designated "Florida State University
56Day" in Florida in recognition of the university's contribution
57to the state as an outstanding institution of higher education.
58 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
59presented to the president of Florida State University, Dr. Eric
60J. Barron, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
61herein.
