COMMENDING LIANE MCDOWELL SORENSON, SENATE MINORITY WHIP, FOR HER SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF DELAWARE AND BIDDING FAREWELL TO OUR ESTEEMED COLLEAGUE AS SHE RETIRES FROM THE SENATE IN 2012. |
WHEREAS, Liane M. Sorenson has represented the Hockessin/Newark Area in the Delaware General Assembly for twenty years with diligence and distinction; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and has served as a State Senator from 1994-2012; and
WHEREAS, born in Chicago, Illinois, Liane graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Counseling degree; and
WHEREAS, Liane and her husband Boyd have spent their June 30th wedding anniversary at Legislative Hall until the early hours of the morning every year since 1993; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson is a cancer survivor, and has been an active member of the Delaware Cancer Consortium and the Lance Armstrong Task Force on Cancer Survivorship; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson has served on some of the most influential committees in the State Legislature, including the Joint Finance Committee, the Bond Bill Committee, Legislative Council, and as Chair of the House Education Committee; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson has also served as a member of the following Senate Committees: Education, Ethics, Executive, Health & Social Services, Judiciary, and Permanent Rules; and
WHEREAS, Liane was formerly the Director of the Office of Women's Affairs at the University of Delaware and served as President of the Women's Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson has been a dedicated advocate for children and families and has sponsored legislation to curb domestic violence, discourage drunk driving, and to tighten licensing requirements for home day care; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson served on the Family Law Commission, first as Co-Chair, then Chair, and continues on as a member; and
WHEREAS, Liane's work and concern for children and families resulted in a school sexual assault reporting policy bill being named the "Liane Sorenson Act"; and
WHEREAS, Senator Sorenson is a grandmother to three and will have her hands full with three more on the way in the next few months; and
WHEREAS, Senator Liane Sorenson has announced her decision to retire from the Senate at the end of this 146th General Assembly.
NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware that we hereby extend our gratitude to The Honorable Liane M. Sorenson for her exemplary service to her constituents and the State of Delaware from 1992-2012 and extend our best wishes to Liane and her family for the future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution, suitably prepared, be presented to Senator Sorenson upon its passage.

This Resolution commends Liane M. Sorenson, Senate Minority Whip, for her service to the people of Delaware and extends best wishes to our esteemed colleague as she retires from the Senate. |
