SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 51
CONTINUING TO RAISE AWARENESS THAT THE MONTH OF MAY IS "MELANOMA AND SKIN CANCER DETECTION AND PREVENTION" MONTH IN DELAWARE
WHEREAS, §606 of Title 1 permanently designates the month of May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month; and
WHEREAS, skin cancer is one of the most common and one of the most preventable forms of cancer; and
WHEREAS, exposure to ultraviolet rays from sunlight and tanning devices is a common risk factor of the disease; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimated that in 2021 there will be 130 newly diagnosed cases in Delaware and 106,110 cases nationally; and
WHEREAS, while the risk of being diagnosed increases with age, research shows that melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults; and
WHEREAS, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a progress update on indicators for skin cancer prevention; and
WHEREAS, the progress report noted that shade and sunscreen use were low among construction and agricultural workers, indoor tanning continued to decline among high school students, and lack of time was a barrier to clinical counseling on skin cancer prevention; and
WHEREAS, continued advocacy and public awareness is needed to maintain the progress made in skin protection and the importance of early detection; and
WHEREAS, May is recognized across the United States as National Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month;
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 151st General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that there is a continuing need to raise awareness that the month of May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Delaware.
SYNOPSIS
This resolution raises awareness that the month of May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Delaware and celebrates ongoing research that lowers melanoma rates.
