SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 5

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION STUDY AND REVISE EMERGENCY EVACUATION ROUTES FOR THE BEACH AREAS IN LOWER SUSSEX COUNTY.

 

 

 

WHEREAS, according to the 2010 Census data, Sussex County’s population grew from 156,638 in 2000 to 197,145 in 2010, a 40,507 person increase;

WHEREAS, the beach areas in lower Sussex County are particularly vulnerable to damage from major storms;

WHEREAS, in 2015, there were 8.5 million visitors to the State of Delaware;

WHEREAS, of those 8.5 million visitors, 97% used a car to get to Delaware;

WHEREAS, in 2015, 75% of the people who visited Delaware travelled 200 miles or less, with the majority coming from Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Washington, DC, and Harrisburg;

WHEREAS, visiting a beach was an activity for 37% of the people who visited Delaware in 2015; and

WHEREAS, Sussex County has an estimated 37,130 seasonal second homes, compared to 530 in Kent County and 749 in New Castle County.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 149 th  General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) study the emergency evacuation routes for the beach areas in lower Sussex County and make any revisions necessary to improve the ability for people to leave the area quickly during an emergency.

  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this resolution be sent to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DelDOT).

 

SYNOPSIS

This concurrent resolution calls on the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) to study and revise as appropriate, the emergency evacuation routes for the beach areas in lower Sussex County.
