SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 25 |
ENCOURAGING THE DELAWARE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS TO CONTINUE EFFORTS TO IMPROVE AND BROADEN DISABILITY SERVICES. |
WHEREAS, it is the policy and practice of Delaware State University, the University of Delaware, and Delaware Technical and Community College to provide accessible programs, services, activities, and reasonable accommodations for any student with a documented disability as defined by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008; and
WHEREAS, to request accommodations under the ADAAA, students must disclose their disability; and
WHEREAS,Delaware State University, the University of Delaware, and Delaware Technical and Community College are committed to notifying all parties within the institutions with a need to know about the available services and approved accommodations in order that such parties may take advantage of the available services and participate in the implementation of them; and
WHEREAS, reasonable accommodations and services may include, but are not limited to:
a. Reading, writing, and note taking service
b. Arrangement for alternate testing accommodation
c. Sign-language interpreting and/or transcribing services
d. Possible reduction of credit hours per semester that do not fundamentally change the requirements of the degree program
e. Alternative format textbooks and other course materials
f. Personal seating priority in the classroom
g. Academic counseling through the Office of Disability Support Services
h. Equal access to tutorial services
WHEREAS, recognizing every disability manifests itself differently in each individual, each institution continually makes every attempt to tailor services, accommodations and academic adjustments to meet the individual's needs;
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that we hereby recognize and acknowledge the vital services provided to students with disabilities by Delaware State University, the University of Delaware, and Delaware Technical and Community College, and we encourage the continued efforts by these institutions to improve and broaden these services so that every student may participate to the fullest extent in the opportunities presented at each institution.
SYNOPSIS
This Concurrent Resolution encourages Delaware's public post-secondary education institutions to continue efforts to improve and broaden disability services. |
