146th GENERAL ASSEMBLY

HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 30

DESIGNATING THE MONTH OF MAY 2012 AS "OLDER AMERICANS MONTH".



WHEREAS, the month of May is observed nationally as "Older Americans Month" to honor and recognize older Americans for the contributions they make to our families, communities and society; and

WHEREAS, Delaware is a state in which approximately130,000 citizens age 65 and over make their home; and

WHEREAS, older adults in Delaware are an increasing population with evolving needs.Statistics show that Delaware is projected to have the 6th largest ratio of seniors to general population in the United States by 2030.By 2030 almost 25% of Delaware's population will be over the age of 65; and

WHEREAS, older adults in Delaware are valuable members of our society who enhance our communities and personal lives, and they have an important role in sharing knowledge, wisdom and understanding of the history of our community through interactions with children, youth, and adults from other generations; and

WHEREAS, the increasing number of baby boomers reaching traditional retirement age highlights the need for increased support of older adults; and

WHEREAS, our older citizens of today and tomorrow promise to be among the most active and involved older adult populations in our nation's history; and

WHEREAS, it is the responsibility of Delaware and all communities in Delaware to work collaboratively to address older adults' unique health and long-term-care challenges; and

WHEREAS, it is crucial that Delaware modernize its systems of care to help empower older adults in Delaware and give them more control over their own lives; and

WHEREAS, Delaware's senior centers and senior service providers make it possible for citizens to age successfully, living well today to assure a better tomorrow; and

WHEREAS, Delaware can improve older citizens' overall quality of life by helping them make behavioral changes in their lifestyles that can reduce the risk of disease, disability, and injury; obtain the tools they need to make informed decisions about, and gain better access to, existing health and long-term-care options in their communities; and have more options to avoid placement in nursing homes and remain at home as long as possible;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 146th General Assembly of the State of Delaware that May 2012 is designated as "Older Americans Month".

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that everyone should take time during May 2012 to honor older adults and the professionals, family members, and citizens who care for them, and to improve the lives of our older citizens and help pave the way for future generations.

This House Resolution designates May 2012 as "Older Americans Month" and urges us to honor older adults and the professionals, family members, and citizens who care for them, and to improve the lives of older adults.
