HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 85

RECOGNIZING MAY 17, 2022, AS “DELTA DAY AT THE DELAWARE CAPITAL.”

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and has been in continuous existence for these 109 years; and  

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. represents a sisterhood of over 300,000 initiated members - primarily Black college-educated women – in more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters worldwide including the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Arabian Gulf, southern Africa, West Africa, and the Republic of Korea; and  

WHEREAS, these women promote academic excellence, provide scholarships, provide support to the underserved, educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of public policy, and provide solutions for problems in their communities; and 

WHEREAS, Delaware’s Chapters - Wilmington (DE) Alumnae, Dover Alumnae, Epsilon Alpha (Delaware State University), Mu Pi (University of Delaware), Sussex County Alumnae, and Middletown (DE) Alumnae Chapter - influence and promote civic contributions through their Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Social Action through Political Awareness and Involvement; and  

WHEREAS, Delaware’s six chapters represent nearly 700 members who are actively involved in their respective communities implementing both national and local programs including Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully), Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities to Build Independence), and various scholarship, health, and economic programs in addition to voter registration and social action efforts. Chapters also work collaboratively statewide on economic development projects, service endeavors, and advocacy.   

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 151st General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that, May 17, 2022, shall be “Delta Day at the Delaware Capital.”

SYNOPSIS

This Concurrent Resolution recognizes the contributions of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority chapters in the State of Delaware and declares May 17, 2022, to be “Delta Day at the Delaware Capital.”
