HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 56

RECOGNIZING THE CAI/EASTER SEALS VOLLEYBALL CHALLENGE AND VOLLEYBALL AMBASSADOR MADDIE HANSON IN THE 11TH YEAR OF DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN TEAM PARTICIPATION.



WHEREAS, Easter Seals has been providing services and support to people with disabilities or special needs and their families for more than 65 years, whether those disabilities or needs occurred at birth or resulted from traumatic injury, disease, or the aging process; and

WHEREAS, Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland's Eastern Shore supports thousands of children and adults each year through direct and indirect services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapies, employment, and adult day programs, caregiver services, and assistive technology; and

WHEREAS, the CAI/Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge is in its 35th year, and since 2001, Easter Seals has raised more than $4.4 million through the Volleyball Challenge, providing much-needed funding for services for children and adults with disabilities; and

WHEREAS, Democratic and Republican legislators have competed against one another for the past ten years to raise awareness and raise funds while engaging in a good-natured rivalry for a good cause; and

WHEREAS, the Republican team is leading seven matches to three after ten years; and

WHEREAS, the Democratic and Republican teams have together raised more than $43,000 in the last ten years; and

WHEREAS, each year an ambassador is chosen to spread the word of the important services Easter Seals provides at the annual volleyball tournament; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 Volleyball Ambassador is Maddie Hanson - a fun, loving, and intelligent two-year-old from Newark, Delaware, who has benefited greatly from physical, occupational, and speech therapies from Easter Seals;

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 148th General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the CAI/Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge on March 18-20, 2016, receives appropriate recognition, and that Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland's Eastern Shore and Volleyball Ambassador Maddie Hanson receive the Legislature's gratitude.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Democrats and Republicans agree to field more elected officials on the court than non-elected persons to uphold the integrity of this contest and ensure a fair outcome.


SYNOPSIS

This resolution recognizes the CAI/Easter Seals Volleyball Challenge on March 18-20, 2016, an event that raises funds for an organization providing services and support to people with disabilities or special needs and their families in Delaware.
