HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 100
RECOGNIZING MAY 10TH AS “MAJOR GEORGE S. WELCH DAY”.
WHEREAS, May 10th is the birthday of Major George S. Welch, who was born in 1918 in Wilmington, Delaware; and
WHEREAS, Major Welch enlisted in the Army Air Corps in February 1940, receiving his pilot’s wings and commission as Second Lieutenant in October 1940; and
WHEREAS, Major Welch was one of the only pilots to make it off the ground during the attack on Pearl Harbor and distinguished himself by shooting down four Japanese aircraft during the attack; and
WHEREAS, Major Welch was honored in a White House ceremony by Franklin D. Roosevelt in May 1942; and
WHEREAS, Major Welch is regarded as a Delaware hero and his namesake, the Major George S. Welch Elementary School, is located at the Dover Air Force Base; and
WHEREAS, recognizing Major Welch will promote history and awareness for those who have served our country and risked their lives for freedom.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that May 10 th is hereby recognized as “Major George S. Welch Day” to honor and celebrate his service and life as a Delaware-born American hero.
