LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

SB 1393, as introduced, Caballero. Postsecondary education: tuition: spouses of veterans.
Existing law, the Donahoe Higher Education Act, establishes the University of California, the California State University, and the California Community Colleges as the 3 segments of public higher education in the state. The provisions of the act apply to the University of California only to the extent that the Regents of the University of California, by appropriate resolution, make them applicable. The act prohibits campuses of those segments from charging mandatory systemwide tuition or fees to specified students who apply for a waiver, including a child of a veteran, as specified.
This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to enact legislation to expand tuition-free and tuition assistance programs for spouses of veterans.
