An act to amend Section 27156.2 of the Vehicle Code, relating to emergency vehicles.

SB 1377, as introduced, Morrell. Emergency vehicles: exhaust systems: exemptions.
Existing law generally requires a motor vehicle to be equipped with a motor vehicle pollution control device. Existing law exempts specified emergency vehicles from this requirement.
This bill would also exempt specified emergency vehicles used by a community college, police academy, fire academy, or similar facility solely for the training of emergency response personnel.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Section 27156.2 of the Vehicle Code is amended to read:

27156.2.
 (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, any publicly owned authorized emergency vehicle operated by a peace officer, as defined in Section 830 of the Penal Code, any authorized emergency vehicle, as defined in Section 165 and used for fighting fires or responding to emergency fire calls pursuant to paragraph (2) of subdivision (b) (b), or pursuant to subdivision (c) or (d) (d), of that section, and any publicly owned authorized emergency vehicle used by an emergency medical technician-paramedic, as defined in Section 1797.84 of the Health and Safety Code, is exempt from requirements imposed pursuant to California law and the regulations adopted pursuant thereto for motor vehicle pollution control devices.
(b) Subdivision (a) shall also apply to any emergency vehicle used by a community college, public safety training facility, police or fire academy, or emergency medical technician or paramedic training program solely for the purpose of preservice or in-service training of police, fire, EMS, or other emergency response personnel.
