Relative to the Lance Corporal Dylan Merola Memorial Highway Overcrossing.

ACR 139, Ramos. Lance Corporal Dylan Merola Memorial Highway Overcrossing.
This measure would designate the highway overcrossing in the County of San Bernardino at the Interstate 210 interchange at Haven Avenue, postmile marker 6.913, as the Lance Cpl. Dylan Merola Memorial Highway Overcrossing. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Dylan Ryan Merola was born in the City of Upland, California, and grew up in the City of Rancho Cucamonga, California; and
WHEREAS, As a child, Merola always wore military attire and dreamed of becoming a United States Marine to make a difference in the world; and
WHEREAS, Merola graduated from Los Osos High School in the City of Rancho Cucamonga, California, in 2019; and
WHEREAS, Merola joined the United States Marine Corps after graduation, with plans, after his service to his country concluded, to attend college and study engineering; and
WHEREAS, Merola’s decision to go into the military was motivated by his two great-grandfathers who were Korean War veterans; and
WHEREAS, Merola was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Pendleton, California; and
WHEREAS, Merola was 1 of 13 United States Service Members killed in the attack on Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021; and
WHEREAS, Merola was deployed in Kabul for less than two weeks before the tragic attack on Hamid Karzai International Airport; and
WHEREAS, Merola was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal for his sacrifice and bravery; and
WHEREAS, Merola was a beloved son, brother, grandson, great-grandson, and nephew, a great friend, and a brave soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice and will be missed by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature pays tribute to the memory of Lance Cpl. Dylan Merola for his bravery, service, and sacrifice for his country by designating the highway overcrossing in the County of San Bernardino at the Interstate 210 interchange at Haven Avenue, postmile marker 6.913, as the Lance Cpl. Dylan Merola Memorial Highway Overcrossing; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
