SENATE BILL 1530

 

 

 

AN ACT

 

amending title 41, chapter 5, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding article 5; relating to the state poet laureate.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Title 41, chapter 5, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding article 5, to read:

ARTICLE 5

STATE POET LAUREATE

START_STATUTE41-971.  State poet laureate; appointment; term; duties

A.  The governor, on the recommendation of the state poet laureate selection committee, shall appoint one person to serve as the state poet laureate.

B.  The term of the state poet laureate is two years to begin and end on the third Monday in January of the corresponding year.

C.  The state poet laureate is not eligible to receive compensation.

D.  The duties of the state poet laureate include:

1.  The performance each year of at least twelve hours of public service relating to poetry in a designated service program approved by the state poet laureate selection committee.  The designated service program may include poetry readings in the public schools, the organization of poetry writing contests, the submission of poetry related articles to the media, participation in discussions in the media relating to poetry and participation in public forums relating to poetry.

2.  Service on the state poet laureate selection committee. END_STATUTE

START_STATUTE41-972.  State poet laureate selection committee; appointment; terms

A.  The state poet laureate selection committee is established consisting of five members who are appointed by the governor.  The members shall include the most recent living former poet laureate and four additional members who serve four year terms beginning on the third Monday in January.  Each appointed member serves at the pleasure of the governor. 

B.  Each former state poet laureate, other than the most recent living former poet laureate, may serve as an advisory member.  Advisory members have no voting privileges and are not counted for the purpose of determining the presence of a quorum.

C.  Members of the committee are not eligible to receive compensation.END_STATUTE

Sec. 2.  State poet laureate; term

Notwithstanding section 41‑971, Arizona Revised Statutes, as added by this act, the governor shall appoint the initial state poet laureate on or before October 1, 2011 for a term that ends on the third Monday in January, 2014.  The initial state poet laureate shall assist and make recommendations to the governor on the composition of the state poet laureate selection committee established by this act.

Sec. 3.  Appointment of initial members of state poet laureate selection committee

A.  On or before November 1, 2011, the governor shall appoint, pursuant to section 41‑972, Arizona Revised Statutes, as added by this act, five members to the state poet laureate selection committee.

B.  Notwithstanding section 41‑972, Arizona Revised Statutes, as added by this act, the initial terms of the members of the state poet laureate selection committee are:

1.  Three terms ending on the third Monday in January, 2014.

2.  Two terms ending on the third Monday in January, 2016.

C.  The governor shall make all subsequent appointments as prescribed by statute.
