A JOINT RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING AND WORKING COOPERATIVELY TO MANAGE ARIZONA'S SHARE OF THE COLORADO RIVER.

Whereas, 2017 is the 95th anniversary of the 1922 Colorado River compact; and

Whereas, the compact is one of the founding principles among other agreements for cooperatively managing the Colorado River, collectively known as "The Law of the River"; and

Whereas, such cooperative agreements have conserved water in the past to help protect water levels in Lake Mead; and

Whereas, the Colorado River supports the economies of the seven Colorado River basin states and Mexico; and

Whereas, the State of Arizona's lower Colorado River allocation of 2.8 million acre feet per year is a vitally important supply supporting the economy and people of this state, including the agricultural, municipal, industrial and tribal sectors in this state.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the Legislature and the Governor of the State of Arizona recognize that it is of critical importance for the State of Arizona to protect its Colorado River allocation and to continue to work cooperatively with those that share the Colorado River to manage this vital resource for the State of Arizona.
