AN ACT

 

amending Title 15, chapter 1, article 8, Arizona Revised Statutes, by adding section 15-186; amending section 15‑341.01, Arizona Revised Statutes; relating to the school year.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.  Title 15, chapter 1, article 8, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended by adding section 15-186, to read:

START_STATUTE15-186.  School year; start and end dates

Except as may be otherwise authorized by the superintendent of public instruction to accommodate year-round school operation, an educational program offered on the basis of a four-day school week or an alternative kindergarten program offered on the basis of a three-day school week, the first day of instruction provided by each charter school for each school year shall begin not earlier than the first Monday of september and the last day of instruction shall be not later than June 30. Sec. 2.  Section 15-341.01, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended to read:

START_STATUTE15-341.01.  One hundred eighty‑day school year; start date; definition

A.  Notwithstanding any other law, school instruction shall be conducted in each public school in this state for school sessions that total at least one hundred eighty days each school year.  The superintendent of public instruction shall cause all relevant school funding formulas to be adjusted to reflect instruction on the one hundred eighty days' equivalency. The department of education shall adjust the amount of state aid distributed to school districts pursuant to section 15‑971 to correspond to the increased number of school days prescribed by this section.

B.  Except as may be otherwise authorized by the superintendent of public instruction to accommodate year-round school operation, an educational program offered on the basis of a four-day school week or an alternative kindergarten program offered on the basis of a three-day school week, the first day of instruction for each school year shall begin not earlier than the first Monday of september and the last day of instruction shall be not later than June 30.

B.  C.  For the purposes of this section, "one hundred eighty days" means one hundred eighty days of instruction or an equivalent number of minutes of instruction per school year based on a different number of days of instruction approved by the school district governing board or charter school governing body.
