A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of August 2012 as "Produce Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more

4

than $155 million in revenues to the economy of this

5

Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, Approximately 4,300 farm families manage about

7

55,000 acres which produce more than 200,000 tons of vegetables

8

for fresh and processing use; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are nationally

10

placed fifth in the production of pumpkins, sixth in processing

11

snap beans, eighth in cantaloupe production and fresh market

12

sweet corn and twelfth in fresh market tomatoes and fresh market

13

cabbage; and

14

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are both delicious and

15

nutritious, providing important vitamins, fiber and other

16

dietary components that are essential to a healthy, balanced

diet; and

WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased

3

consumption of vegetables for both nutritional and disease

4

prevention purposes; and

5

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's fresh vegetables are available in

6

abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,

7

roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout the

8

Commonwealth during August; and

9

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to

10

using integrated pest management and other good agricultural

11

practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,

12

vegetables and vegetable products that are both nutritious and

13

safe; and

14

WHEREAS, Studies show that produce, when consumed as part of

15

a healthy diet, improve overall diet quality and may help to

16

reduce the risk of certain diseases; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of August 2012

18

as "Produce Month" and recognize the Commonwealth's abundant

19

supply of "PA Preferred" fresh and processed vegetable products

20

while recognizing the industry's contributions to our economy

21

and our health.
