A RESOLUTION
Recognizing Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio,March 30, 2013.

WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to recognize March 30, 2013, as the First Annual Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio; and

WHEREAS,  The United States was involved in the Vietnam War for a period of twenty years, and during that time, more than 8,744,000 Americans served in the armed forces, including more than 58,000 who were killed, more than 300,000 who were wounded, and approximately 600 who were held as prisoners of war. On March 30, 1973, U.S. combat troops were officially withdrawn from Vietnam, and in 2012, the Ohio General Assembly and Governor John Kasich designated March 30 as Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio in honor of those who fought, died, or are still unaccounted for as a result of the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS,  This year marks the Fortieth Anniversary of the end of America's role in the Vietnam War, and the First Annual Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio is being observed with a four-day commemoration sponsored by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and the Buckeye State Council of the Vietnam Veterans of America and partially underwritten by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ohio Charities. Events include opening and closing ceremonies, a formal dinner, panel discussions, and a visit from the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, and Vietnam veterans will be able to record their experiences to be filed at the Ohio History Center; and

WHEREAS,  It is imperative that we openly acknowledge our debt to those who bore our country's standard with courage, dignity, and decency through their military service. It is, indeed, fitting that Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio be observed to honor the selfless and courageous men and women who served as members of the United States armed forces during the Vietnam War; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, recognize March 30, 2013, as the First Annual Vietnam Veterans Day in Ohio; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit duly authenticated copies of this Resolution to the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, the Buckeye State Council of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ohio Charities, and the news media of Ohio.
