     Requires veterinarians to provide written prescriptions and certain notifications.

An Act concerning veterinarians and supplementing chapter 16 of Title 45 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    Any veterinarian who prescribes, sells, dispenses or distributes any prescription item to an animal's owner or person responsible for the animal shall provide to that owner or person:

     a.    Oral and written notification that the prescription item may be obtained from sources other than the veterinarian; and

     b.    A written prescription, whether or not requested by that owner or person, without imposing any additional fee for writing the prescription.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect 90 days after enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires veterinarians who prescribe, sell, dispense or distribute any prescription item to notify the animal's owner or the person responsible for the animal, orally and in writing, that the prescription item may be obtained from sources other than the veterinarian, and to provide that owner or person a written prescription, whether or not requested by that owner or person, without imposing any additional fee for writing the prescription.
