Senate Concurrent Resolution 620

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL "CHARGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH DAVID SANDERS FOR WINNING THEIR 3-PEAT CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FIFTH CHAMPIONSHIP IN SIX YEARS.

WHEREAS, Malik Newman scored a game-high 25 points as Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team rolled past Vicksburg 49-33 to claim the MHSAA Class 5A Boys State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum on March 14, 2014, in front of an estimated crowd of 6,800; and

WHEREAS, the win clinched Callaway's third consecutive State Championship and fifth in the last six years.  It also secured Callaway's recent run among the best-ever in basketball-crazy Jackson.  Callaway became only the second Jackson Public School Team to win three consecutive State Championships after Lanier in Class 4A from 2005-2007; and

WHEREAS, Newman, who finished with 25 points and six rebounds, came out firing from the very beginning.  He had nine points in the first quarter to help Callaway secure a 16-5 lead.  Callaway had an eight-point lead at halftime and then just blew Vicksburg out in the second half.  The Chargers went on a 14-2 run to open the second half and built up an insurmountable 21-point lead heading into the fourth quarter; and

WHEREAS, the title is the first under first-year Coach David Sanders, who replaced Wayne Brent when he left for Jackson State; and

WHEREAS, the 2013-2014 Callaway "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team Roster is as follows:  Keigan Haley, Cortez Mitchell, Dayall Harris, Dontelius Ross, Decardo Day, Marcus Summerville, Jamal Bolden, Bakari Conley, Malik Newman, Damien Moore, Chris Green, Dietrich Taylor, Javious Bardney and Mario Kegler; and Coach David Sanders; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach David Sanders for winning their third straight Class 5A State Championship and fifth in 6 years, and extend our best wishes to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach David Sanders and Principal William Trammell III for the team, forwarded to the Jackson Public School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
