Senate Concurrent Resolution 570

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2013 PICAYUNE HIGH SCHOOL "MAROON TIDE" FOOTBALL TEAM AND VETERAN HEAD COACH DODD LEE FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Picayune High School "Maroon Tide" Football Team scored 21 unanswered points in 5 minutes to win the MHSAA Class 5A Championship Game 42-35 on December 7, 2013, at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium against Oxford High School; and

WHEREAS, Kardarius Cross rushed around the left edge and up the sideline 75 yards to cap off the game winner late in the fourth quarter.  The defense cemented the Title by recovering a fumble with 1:10 remaining in the game.  The Maroon Tide outscored Oxford 21-0 in the final seven minutes, and the three touchdowns came in a span of five minutes.  The Maroon Tide rushed for 374 yards to capture the State Title; and

WHEREAS, this was the second Title for Picayune (12-2) in three years; and

WHEREAS, Picayune tied the game 35-35 with less than three minutes remaining when Preston Dedeaux scored his third touchdown of the game.  The comeback began before that, with Daveon Greene's 47-yard reception from Boderick Scott with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Picayune trailed 35-21.  Senior running back Preston Dedeaux led the rushing attack for Picayune and scored three touchdowns.  Daveon Greene, Hunter Smith and Kadarius Cross each played a big part on a key late defensive play for the Maroon Tide in knocking a Charger receiver out of bounds to stop the clock during Picayune's big rally.  Senior Russell Whitehead made an outstanding play on a kickoff after Picayune had tied the game that kept Oxford on its side of the field and helped set up the game-winning score.  Ends Chance Kellar and Ethan Frierson each made huge defensive plays late in the game, Kellar with a fumble recovery and Frierson with a big 11-yard tackle for loss.  Chance Frierson also assisted in that final fumble recover as well.  Placekicker Jackson Samples was solid and steady for Picayune all season long, as well as giving credit to snapper Sam Hickman and holder Josiah Hickman; and

WHEREAS, the Picayune Maroon Tide was officially named to the Ninth Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions Presented by the Army National Guard.  This exclusive honor is reserved for only 50 of the best teams in the entire country.  Given the fact that nearly 17,000 varsity teams compete, that puts the Maroon Tide in the top one-fifth of one percent of teams in the country.  In order to be eligible, the team not only had to be nationally ranked, but also had to win a State Championship.  Defeating Oxford 42-35 on December 7, 2013, marked the completion of an incredible 12-2 season and earned Picayune an invitation to the Tour of Champions; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 Picayune Team's statistics were impressive and there were outstanding performances by individual players, but the key to this team's consistent success is the constant team atmosphere and year-round hard work; and

WHEREAS, the 2013 Maroon Tide Varsity Roster is as follows:  Deandre Anderson, HB, CB; Coren Nixon, WR; Jackson Samples, K; Kadarius Cross, KR, RB, CB; Jon Brunson, S; Michael Smith, WR; Gerrell Keaton, S; Kevin Reed, WR, CB; Jaylin Dees, CB; Boderick Scott, QB; Josiah Hickman, QB, P; Dalton Hedgepeth, WR, DB; Devin Hedgepeth, QB; Abraham Fletcher; Ashton Williams, S; Will Heck, DT; Tyler Smith, WR, CB; Tony Washington, CB; Aaron Hart, TE, LB; Trey Wimbrow, S, RB; Jonathan Baker, DE, WR; Jordan Dedeaux, FS; Earl Nastasi, FB, LB; Preston Dedeaux, RB, S; Jameson Rollins, DT; Alex Aaron, TE, DT; Russell Whitehead, CB; Cordale Helton, S; Xavier Haralson FB, LB; Sam Hickman, LB, WB; Chance Frierson, DT; Daveon Greene, RB; Hunter Smith, DT; Jacob Namias, OL; Ethan Frierson, OL, DE; Zach Borley, DT; Keith Gaston, DT; Drew Lambert, DE; Deandre McDonald, DT; Devan Spiers, G, DT; Chase Roberson, C; Arrione Vaughn, LB; Gage Wilson, OL; Gavin Stockstill, OL; Austin Ramsey, OL; Chance Kellar, DE, G; Octavius Kelly; Jesse Hall, DT; Tommie Curry, OL; Caleb Dorn, C; Connor Bryan, OT; D'Marcus Haralson, OT; Nathan Gill, OL; Hunter Love, S; Rapheal Bickham, DE; Michael Mavenyenggwa, DT; Gary'A Nicholson, DT; and Josiah Stallings, DT OL; and Coach Dodd Lee; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the achievement of this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Picayune High School "Maroon Tide" Football Team and veteran Head Coach Dodd Lee for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship, their second title in 3 years, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future athletic and academic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Dodd, Picayune Principal Kent Kirkland, forwarded to the Picayune School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
