Senate Concurrent Resolution 527

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REMEMBERING THE GALLANT SERVICE AND MOURNING THE LOSS OF UNITED STATES ARMY SPECIALIST TERRY KISHAUN DANTEZ GORDON OF SHUBUTA, MISSISSIPPI, FROM INJURIES SUSTAINED IN ACTION IN SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN ON DECEMBER 17, 2013.

WHEREAS, a Mississippi soldier was among six soldiers fatally wounded in a helicopter crash in Zabul in Southern Afghanistan.  Among those lost was 22-year-old United States Army Specialist Terry Kishaun Dantez Gordon of Shubuta, Mississippi.  The Mississippi soldier was conducting a mission on board a UH-60M Blackhawk helicopter near Now Bahar, Afghanistan, when the aircraft underwent a hard landing; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Gordon was the fifth Clarke County resident to die in military service since September 11, 2011.  The Town of Quitman again sadly embraced a fallen young soldier who died for his country in the Middle East.  When Specialist Terry K.D. Gordon (originally from Pachuta) returned to Clarke County in an American flag-draped casket, he was hailed as a hero and a reminder that freedom is not free.  The flags in Quitman were lowered to half-mast, all police forces supported his family, and he received a military escort from Quitman High School's ROTC; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Terry K.D. Gordon was assigned to Troop E, 1st Squadron, 6th Calvary Regiment, 1st Combat Action Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; and

WHEREAS, Quitman High School Principal Michael McDonald described Gordon, a 2011 graduate of Quitman High School, as a leader whose confidence was clearly evident.  He was dependable and well-respected among the students; and

WHEREAS, carried by an Army Honor Guard, he returned to the family and state he loved and was buried with full military honors on January 4, 2014, in Campbell Cemetery (also called Pachuta Cemetery), at Pachuta, Mississippi.  As relatives sat beside his casket, they were presented with American flags, along with his awards and decorations:  Bronze Star Medal, Posthumous; Purple Heart, Posthumous; Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal, Posthumous; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Bronze Service Star; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; NATO Medal, Posthumous; Combat Action Badge; Aviation Badge; and Expert Marksmanship Badge; and

WHEREAS, since operations began in the War on Terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan, at least 82 soldiers with Mississippi ties have died in action.  Specialist Gordon was a loving son who is counted among America's heroes committed to our nation's safety and security.  To a country, a fallen soldier means a national loss; to a community, a fallen soldier means a true hero; to a parent or wife, a fallen soldier means a son or husband who won't be coming home.  Mississippians understand the cost of conflict, because we have paid them in the past; and it is with great pride and humility that we recognize the heroic action of this great American and Mississippian, who was the guardian of civilization as we know it today:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby remember the gallant service and mourn the loss of United States Army Specialist Terry Kishaun Dantez Gordon from injuries sustained in action in Southern Afghanistan on December 17, 2013, and extend our thoughts and prayers to his family in honor of their sacrifice and our sorrow on his passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Specialist Gordon's family and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
