Senate Resolution 120 - Introduced SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 120 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION A Resolution honoring John Pollak for his dedicated 1 service to the Legislative Services Agency and the 2 Iowa General Assembly. 3 WHEREAS, for almost three decades John Pollak 4 has worked unceasingly to keep the machineries of 5 state government well-oiled and working smoothly as a 6 legal services research analyst, drafter, editor, and 7 committee services administrator in the nonpartisan, 8 drafting and staffing division of the Legislative 9 Services Agency; and 10 WHEREAS, John, dedicating his career to the ideal 11 that good research, good counsel, and artful and 12 ingenious drafting results in good lawmaking, became 13 an expert in the drafting of legislation and staffing 14 of committees in the areas of human services, child 15 welfare, mental health, appropriations, and state 16 government; and 17 WHEREAS, John continually assumed more 18 responsibility, being named the agency’s first 19 Committee Services Administrator in 1990, coordinating 20 the biennial orientation for newly elected legislators, 21 and most often becoming the face of the agency in his 22 oversight of standing committee staffing and delivery 23 of work products to the members for their next work 24 day; and 25 WHEREAS, with his abiding interest in his fellow 26 human beings and hospitable nature, in his personal 27 life, John, along with his wife Nancy, has been an 28 -1- LSB 6229SV (3) 85 jr/rj 1/ 3
S.R. 120 active organizer of and participant in countless 1 bicycling, canoeing, and other outdoor adventures, 2 host to and entertainer of a multitude of friends 3 and acquaintances, and promoter of local and global 4 opportunities to spread diplomacy through his good 5 sense of humor and bad jokes of the day; and 6 WHEREAS, John brought these skills and endeavors to 7 good task as a well-suited member of the “team humans”, 8 and in doing so expanding the legislative lexicon 9 to include such terms as “floopy”, “draconian”, and 10 “version blur” when portraying legislation; and 11 WHEREAS, John has been an exceptional liaison 12 between the Legislative Services Agency and the leaders 13 and members of the General Assembly and their caucus 14 and personal staffs, continually offering good cheer 15 and maintaining an exuberance for legislative staffing, 16 exercising his loyalty to the General Assembly as 17 a co-equal branch of government, and pursuing his 18 untiring resolve to always offer his sage advice 19 and prepare the highest quality work products in 20 the shortest time frame possible, in order to assist 21 the General Assembly in its lawmaking functions; NOW 22 THEREFORE, 23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 24 recognizes John for his extraordinary and long-term 25 public service, his unsurpassed devotion to the 26 legislature as the state’s lawmaking institution, and 27 his inspiring leadership in the Legislative Services 28 Agency’s fulfillment of its nonpartisan drafting and 29 staffing missions, and, upon his retirement, wishes him 30 -2- LSB 6229SV (3) 85 jr/rj 2/ 3
