RESOLUTION
Commending
the Healthy Kids Challenge program and recognizing March 3, 2011, as Healthy
Kids Challenge Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS,
Georgia is the second highest ranked state in the nation for childhood obesity,
with more than one out of every three children in Georgia suffering from
obesity; and
WHEREAS,
over 37 percent of Georgia children from the ages of ten to 17 are considered
overweight or obese; and
WHEREAS,
childhood obesity affects the overall health of a child as well as confidence,
self-esteem, motivation, and outlook on life; and
WHEREAS,
the Alliance for a Healthier Generation created the Healthy Schools Program, a
program that not only examines the health and wellness of students, but also a
school's faculty and staff; and
WHEREAS,
Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle initiated the Healthy Kids Challenge, which is a
state-wide challenge to Georgia's schools to sign up for the Alliance for a
Healthier Generation's Healthy Schools Program; and
WHEREAS,
the Healthy Schools Program gives Georgia schools tools and a framework to
implement a wellness program that will aid their students in learning about
living a healthier lifestyle; and
WHEREAS,
Major Dukes, a student from Greensboro, Georgia, serves on the National Advisory
Board of the Healthy Kids Alliance as Georgia's Wellness Ambassador;
and
WHEREAS,
children who grow up learning about health and wellness are better prepared for
the challenges of adult life and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's
Healthy Schools Program equips students with the knowledge and tools to combat
not only obesity problems, but also other challenges faced in their daily
lives.
NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of
this body commend the Healthy Kids Challenge program, encourage all Georgia
schools to join the Healthy Kids Challenge and participate in fighting childhood
obesity, and recognize March 3, 2011, as Healthy Kids Challenge Day at the state
capitol.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of this body commend and recognize Major
Dukes for his outstanding efforts on behalf of Georgia's youth to encourage and
promote a healthy lifestyle.
BE
IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to transmit appropriate copies of this resolution to Major Dukes
and members of the public and the press.
