   Relative to National Strawberry Month.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   ACR 136, Eggman. National Strawberry Month.
   This measure, in celebration of National Strawberry Month, would
recognize the contributions of California strawberry farmers and the
California Strawberry Commission in supporting a quintessential
California crop that sustains families, communities, the environment,
the California economy, and the opportunity for immigrants to pursue
the American Dream.



   WHEREAS, May is National Strawberry Month; and
   WHEREAS, California grows more strawberries than any other place
in the world, including all 49 other states combined, and more
organic strawberries than all 49 other states combined; and
   WHEREAS, California strawberry farmers grow nearly 90 percent of
all strawberries produced in the United States; and
   WHEREAS, California's 400 family farmers and 60 shippers and
processors of strawberries are responsible for contributing $2.3
billion to the economy and generating thousands of jobs ranging from
researchers and harvesters to exporters and grocers; and
   WHEREAS, California strawberry farmers represent the diverse
cultures found in the Golden State; and
   WHEREAS, Many California strawberry farm owners started out as
field workers- a testament to an industry that presents opportunity
for workers to own their own businesses and fulfill the American
dream; and
   WHEREAS, California's strawberry farmers are leading the world in
environmental research dedicated to improving and promoting
sustainable farming practices; and
   WHEREAS, Thanks to California strawberry farmers, some 40,000
acres of land along the Central Coast are protected and preserved;
and
   WHEREAS, Strawberry farmers, shippers, and processors are
represented by the California Strawberry Commission, a state
government entity that promotes strawberries as an important part of
healthy nutrition and lifestyles; and
   WHEREAS, In 1994, the California Strawberry Commission formed the
California Strawberry Scholarship Program which has given over $1.5
million to farmers' children bound for college or trade schools; now,
therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate
thereof concurring, That the Legislature, in celebration of National
Strawberry Month, recognizes the contributions of California
strawberry farmers and the California Strawberry Commission in
supporting a quintessential California crop that sustains families,
communities, the environment, the California economy, and the
opportunity for immigrants to pursue the American Dream; and be it
further
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
