SENATE RESOLUTION 1002

A RESOLUTION

On the death of John Alan Greene.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Arizona Department of Revenue director and distinguished Arizona statesman John Alan Greene passed away on October 2, 2013 at the age of sixty-five.

John Greene spent his formative years in New York, earning a law degree from St. John's University and a master's degree from New York University before beginning his successful legal career.  He quickly proved to be a talented corporate attorney, serving as in-house counsel to Manhattan Life Insurance Company, New York Life and Greyhound Leasing, and as chief counsel for Greyhound Dial Corporation.

With his election to the Arizona Senate in 1990, John Greene embarked on a remarkable record of public service.  He ably served his constituents in this capacity from 1991 to 1996, including service as Senate president for two terms.  During his tenure as a legislator, John Greene pushed for tort reform and worked on tax policy, criminal justice issues and victims' rights legislation.  In 1997, Governor Fife Symington tapped him to serve as director of the Arizona Department of Insurance.  Before Governor Jan Brewer named him as director of the Arizona Department of Revenue in 2011, John Greene also served as chairman of the State Board of Equalization and chief deputy treasurer for Maricopa County.

Despite the demands of his career, John Greene gave selflessly of his time and energy to various worthwhile endeavors.  He had a compassionate spirit, an altruistic character and a contagious sense of humor.  The Arizona State Bar Association presented him with the highest award for pro bono work for his efforts on behalf of the Phoenix Indian Center.

Dedicated to his family, John Greene is survived by his wife, Janice, and his two sons, Richard and Christopher.  He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends and the people of the State of Arizona.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the Senate express regret at the passing of John Greene and extend their deepest sympathies to his family members and friends.
