HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2028

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 7, 2014 AS NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY IN ARIZONA.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, heart disease is the number one killer of women, yet it is often preventable; and

Whereas, cardiovascular diseases cause the death of one in three women each year, killing approximately one woman every minute; and

Whereas, an estimated 43 million women in the United States are affected by cardiovascular diseases; and

Whereas, heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined, but it is often undiagnosed; and

Whereas, 90% of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease, yet only one in five American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat; and

Whereas, only 24% of participants in all heart-related studies are women; and

Whereas, since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease, and the survival rate gap between men and women continues to widen; and

Whereas, women are less likely to call 911 for themselves when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack than they are if someone else were having symptoms of a heart attack; and

Whereas, the American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement has been impacting the health of women for ten years.  The lives of more than 627,000 women have been saved, and 330 fewer women are dying every day; and

Whereas, thousands of lives can be saved each year by increasing awareness about heart disease and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease; and

Whereas, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of National Wear Red Day, Go Red For Women encourages all women across America to Go Red on February 7, 2014 by wearing red and to do the following:

1.  Get their numbers by asking their doctors to check their blood pressure and cholesterol.

2.  Own their lifestyle by stopping smoking, losing weight, exercising and eating healthy.

3.  Realize their risk by recognizing that heart disease is the cause of one in three female deaths each year.

4.  Educate their families by making healthy food choices for themselves and their families and teaching their children the importance of staying active.

5.  Do not be silent but rather tell every woman they know that heart disease is their number one killer.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:

1.  That the Members of the Legislature proclaim February 7, 2014 as National Wear Red Day in Arizona in recognition of the importance of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke.

2.  That the Members of the Legislature encourage citizens to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by wearing the color red in honor of National Wear Red Day in Arizona.
